PhD Dissertation

My project was entitled, “Privacy and Surveillance in the Workplace: Closing the Electronic Surveillance Gap”. With the help of my doctoral supervisor, Professor Andrew Botterell, I created a PhD dissertation that synthesized privacy legislation and cases with social theories of privacy and surveillance. Ultimately, I proposed amending the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) to provide modern privacy protections to address emerging surveillance technologies. The result was that I created the much-needed balance of interests between the parties involved in the employment context.

I gained several transferable skills at Western Law, including: project management; research, analysis, and writing; determination and drive; presentation; interdisciplinary and design thinking; organization; and resilience.

I will never forget my doctoral experience at Western Law. Moving forward, I plan on using the skills that I have gained in the next stage of my career. Since graduating, I have been a Law Professor and Senior Policy Advisor. I hope to tackle complex technological problems and use legal, policy, and ethical approaches for which my newly acquired skills will be useful to help make the world a better place.
