FIMULAW 2019: Interdisciplinary Connections

When I was at Western Law, I, with the other members of the organizing committee, helped to organize the very first and subsequent interdisciplinary conferences involving graduate students of the faculties of Law, Music, and Information and Media Studies.

I will never forget my last year of the conference, where I gave a talk regarding a potential mandatory course in Indigenous Law with an interdisciplinary panel of presenters, a lightning talk on Privacy Law, a poster presentation on Privacy Law, and the closing remarks on behalf of the organizing committee.

And one highlight from the first year of FIMULAW was unquestionably when I gave a panel discussion about another favourite area of mine, Music Law. I discussed Music Copyrights in Canada compared to the United States. The talk was a true interdisciplinary work since it combined music, law, and media. In addition to the panel, I created separate poster presentations about Privacy Law and Music Law.

I gained several skills during these experiences, including: organization; presentation; brainstorming with an organizing committee; budgeting; communicating with the VP of Research to secure funding for the conference; and collaborating with all members of the three faculties.

I am confident that I will take with me the skills that I gained from organizing and presenting at these interdisciplinary research days. I thoroughly enjoyed my experiences and I thank all members of the faculty and staff of the three faculties. I would like to thank Professor Valerie Oosterveld for getting me involved in the first year this began, and give special thanks to Karen Kueneman for her support especially during the last year that I was involved.
